Things to note
In order to apply a credit note balance to open invoices, you must ensure that the ending balance is equal to $0. This may require some manual calculation on your end.
In this example, you can see that the credit note cannot be applied as the amounts must equal one another.
The only time a credit note automatically gets applied to an invoice is when a credit note is issued from an open invoice in an amount that is equal to, or less than the balance of that invoice. Otherwise, credit note balances are never automatically applied to invoices. This includes the following scenarios:
- An invoice that is already or has become past due will not get a credit note balance automatically applied to it
- A new invoice that is created will not get a credit note balance automatically applied to it
- A credit note is issued in an amount greater than the balance on an invoice will not get automatically applied toward another open invoice
